A research team from the Ministry of Health and Welfare took a gold prize at the U.S.-based Edison Awards for its artificial intelligence-powered sudden death warning system, underscoring the government’s commitment to advancing innovative technology applications and raising the profile of the country’s smart medicine on the global stage.

According to the MOHW, the AI vital sign monitoring system predicts changes in a patient’s heartbeat, respiration rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation an hour in advance, facilitating clinical decision-making and providing essential information for caregivers and patients at home and long-term care facilities. The indigenously developed system has been adopted by the ministry’s Taichung Hospital in central Taiwan.

The researchers were led by Lee Chien-chang, director of the MOHW’s Information Department, the ministry said, adding that the group won the same honor last year for developing a virtual reality medical imaging system.

Lee, who received training at Stanford’s Mussallem Center for Biodesign, is Taiwan’s first seed teacher in the field. He offers courses at National Taiwan University in Taipei City to grow the country’s innovative talent pool, the ministry said.

Lee lauded the research team for seamlessly integrating technology and clinical data. He also expressed gratitude to fellow NTU professor Wu Tzong-Lin and the ASUS technical team in Taipei for their support.

The Edison Awards place a high emphasis on submissions’ sophistication and societal impact, the MOHW said, adding that NVIDIA CEO Jenson Huang and former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger presented this year’s awards. (POC-E)
